Source of Inspiration

"Sr."

Shot in black and white, I found this film to be a raw (strong language), revealing, and moving documentary of the dynamic relationship between famed father and son, Robert Downey Sr. and Robert Downey Jr. It is both entertaining and laughter-filled as it witnesses the gentle decline of "Sr' and the mutual love and admiration they share. As described by Netflix: Robert Downey Jr. pays tribute to his late father in this documentary chronicling the life and eclectic career of pioneering filmmaker Robert Downey Sr. Directed by Chris Smith. Produced by Team Downey.

The Essential Questions: Interview Your Family to Uncover Stories and Bridge Generations

As I began my own journey of helping my family and other families capture and preserve the life stories of their loved ones, I discovered this book: The Essential Questions: Interview Your Family to Uncover Stories and Bridge Generations by renowned anthropologist Elizabeth Keating, PhD. I am thankful to this brilliant author for her wisdom and inspiration. I’ve borrowed heavily from her approach. I highly recommend reading it.

Dick Johnson is Dead

“As her father nears the end of his life, filmmaker Kirsten Johnson stages his death in inventive and comical ways to help them both face the inevitable.” (Credit: Netflix). Made in 2020, this is an insightful, funny, and delightful film. You must see it to understand just how poignant it is.

Randy Bachman’s Vinyl Tap Tour: Every Song Tells a Story

I loved this documentary! Rich with storytelling and outstanding music, this film weaves the true tale of how four young guys, barely adults, found their way to stardom. Hosted by and starring famed musician and music historian Randy Bachman, Bachman recalls the band crossing the border in vans and station wagons to play at community halls, often costing them more in gas than what the gig paid. Described on IMDb as "Filmed in Winnipeg, the city that inspired many of his anthemic songs, Randy Bachman weaves together the chart-topping hits of the Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive with the often-humorous stories that brought the songs to life." Directed by John Barnard (2014).
